We love planet earth as much as this whale loves kelp! However, kelp paddies have a tendency to collect free floating plastics like straws, bottle caps and bags. Please remember dispose of trash properly and keep our oceans clean. Every little bit helps. This Wednesday is Earth Day! The first Earth Day was on April 22, 1970. This will be its 50th Anniversary! 1970 was an important year for environmental action. As a result of the Earth Day movement, in 1970 important legislation was passed on clean water, clean air, and toxic substances. Some notable examples include enacting the endangered species act and the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency! Legislation aimed to protect our planet is an important part of conservation so marine life (and us!) can enjoy a clean and safe ocean. Look at that Southern California sky! What makes a sunset? The color from a sunset results from a phenomenon called light scattering. Molecules and small particles in the atmosphere change the direction of light rays causing them to scatter. When the sun is low on the horizon, sunlight passes through more air (atmosphere) than during the day when the sun is high. This affects how we see blueviolet light. More atmosphere means more scattering away of blue and violet light leaving reds, yellow, and oranges behind for our eyes to detect!***********#newportbeach #sunset #wildlife #wildlifephotography #animalonplanet #balboaisland #california #lonelyplanet #explorepage #instagoodmyphoto #bbcearth April 18, 2020 Read More
Is there anything more magical than a whale breathing rainbows?? We like to call this phenomenon “rain-blows”! When the light catches the exhale of a whale just right you can see a rainbow! *********#whalewatching #newportbeach #discoverocean #cetacean #whales #wildlifeonearth #dronephotography #dronestagram #dronenature #aerialphotography #droneoftheday #dronelife #roamtheplanet #ourplanetdaily #ourlonelyplanet April 16, 2020 Read More

Tooth raking is a social behavior often done between dolphins. It is the act of scraping their blunt teeth against the skin of another dolphin. The frequent social squabbles of Risso's dolphins result in a complete change in coloration of the dolphin's skin from dark grey at birth to almost all white later in life. But the color change isn't all due to tooth raking. Risso's dolphins eat primarily squid and the beaks and tentacles of these cephalopods can also leave scarring! We see rake (tooth marks) on may species of dolphins including bottlenose, common dolphins, and even orcas! Photo by @chelseamayerphotography******** April 7, 2020 Read More
How high do you think this dolphin jumped?! This bottlenose dolphin rocketed out of the water just off Newport Beach. We love watching these wild dolphins express themselves!
