Look at that Southern California sky! What makes a sunset? The color from a sunset results from a phenomenon called light scattering. Molecules and small particles in the atmosphere change the direction of light rays causing them to scatter. When the sun is low on the horizon, sunlight passes through more air (atmosphere) than during the day when the sun is high. This affects how we see blueviolet light.
