Color patterns on the common dolphin are the most elaborate of any cetacean. Check out the clearly defined hourglass coloration on this dolphin's side. The dark gray fades into light gray and crosses into tan and cream. They are truly stunning! Amazing photo captured today by @chelseamayerphotography February 7, 2020 Read More
Journey to the Lagoons! Why do Pacific gray whales migrate over 5,000miles south to the Lagoons of Baja each year? Gray whale calves are born with only a small layer of insulating blubber. Imagine enduring a frigid Alaskan winter with a light jacket. Cold right? The warm, protected lagoons of Baja act as a nursery for growing calves. During their 12-13 week stay in the lagoon, the calf will nurse on their mother's high-fat milk to triple their birth weight. Not only will they be strong enough to make the journey north, they will have a nice blubber layer to keep them warm in the Arctic waters. Basking in the sun! The chilly winter weather doesn’t bother most marine mammals. Sea lions have insulating blubber and fur to keep them warm but that doesn’t stop them from soaking in some sunshine! Beautiful photo of this male sea lion by @chelseamayerphotography February 5, 2020 Read More
Have you joined us to see one of these amazing Arctic travelers? Every winter Pacific gray whales embark on a 5,000 mile journey south to the Lagoons of Baja. They leave their high latitude foraging areas in the Chukchi and Bering sea prior to a massive ice sheet covering the cold, arctic waters. On their way they will pass by the beautiful coastlines of British Columbia and the Western United States where they will eventually end up right here in the waters of Newport Beach, California. Only 500 or so miles to go from here until they reach the refuge of the lagoons in Baja. •••••••••#roamtheoceans #oceanlife #oceanlovers #whales #whalewatching #dronestagram #ourplanetdaily #discoverocean #earthfocus #depthsofearth #fromwhereidrone #dronenature #droneheroes #dronepals February 3, 2020 Read More
